Why does my heart beat harder and flutter every time I lay down?

The first thing to find out is whether this is a real rhythm problem or not (I suspect not). Some of it may have to do with the shape of your body and your emotional state when you feel these flutters. Most people feel their heart on occasion and for a few it may be uncomfortable when it happens. It is unlikely to be serious, particularly if not associated with other symptoms such as

  • Chest pain
  • Feeling faint or dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Trouble breathing

If this sensation is caused by an abnormal rhythm (arrhythmia), you need your heart checked out with some blood tests (including Thyroid), an EKG and 24 hour monitoring. That will determine the basics.

You can read more about heart rhythm here:

You’ll find these are rather common complaints and most people don’t need treatment, only reassurance once their heart proves OK. Read these, get your tests done and come back if you still have questions for me,

Hope this helps,
