Question:
Hi Dr T,
I recently had an echo scan for chest pain and the only thing to come back was a bav that is functioning normally. Can an echo rule out my chest pain as cardiac, my bp is very good and i am 27 yo. i heard of a person who had chest pain every now and then died from an enlarged heart that turned out to be an abnormality or something ? he was a semi pro football player. i am just too scared to go running or play sports…

Most patients with BAV do very well and don’t need special treatment:

Sudden death in athletes is very different situation and your ECHO would have an enlarged heart:

None of this applies to you!
Hope this helps,

I’m 27 year old with Bicuspid Aortic Valve(mild regurgitation) I also have mildly high blood pressure and occasional tachycardia episodes since I was kid. After about 7 years of not seeing a Cardiologist, my new job finally gave me insurance so I went and saw one. She said nothing has changed other than my Aortic root is at 1.3 and needs slight monitoring. For some reason I have been having panic attacks lately, worrying about my heart and long term life expectancy. I actually have things I want to stay around for now…Anything you can tell me to make me feel better will help. I worry every day that my tachycardia is actually a fib and that I’m gunna die of a heart attack or stroke at any min. Even after doing a stress test, echo, ekg and blood test. PLEASE HELP, I’m desperate.
