blood thinners

Question:

i am 78 years old and had a 24 hour atrial fibrillatton.my pulse deopped to 50 doctor put me on 150mg of pradaxa.i have diabetes and mild kidney impairment.am concerned about bleeding from pradaxa, because there is no drug to stop bleeding.is warafin safer?whap happens if you dont take any blood thinners my doctor said 10% chance of stroke if dont take blood thinners.

Hi Howard,
You are correct to be concerned. Recent reports have indicated indeed that patients in your category (80 years and over with impaired renal function)  are at a much higher risk for complications (bleeding, cardiac events) in the treatment of Afib with pradaxa than with coumadin:

Hope this helps,
