On November 15, 2010 Thomson Reuters released its annual study identifying the top U.S. hospitals for inpatient cardiovascular services. The study examined the performance of 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions such as angioplasties.

Cardiac rehabilitation is a way for people who have had bypass, valve replacement, transplant, or other cardiac surgical procedures to get going again. A team of physicians, nurses, exercise physiologists and nutritionists will help you feel well again by leading you through a rehab program designed to fit your needs. There are four phases of cardiac rehabilitation.

What can you do to reduce the risk of heart disease?

There are several lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of heart disease:

In the United States and most developed countries, CardioVascular Disease (CVD), which includes coronary Artery Disease (CAD), stroke, and peripheral arterial disease, is far and away the leading cause of death.

This type of treatment includes the following types of medications, that:

  • Thin your blood,
  • Slow your heart down, so that less demand matches limited blood supply,
  • Relax (dilate) your arteries so that more blood can pass through a wider pathway,
  • Lower your blood pressure so that the heart has to work less,
  • Modify your cholesterol to control the build-up of plaque (blockage),
  • It also includes lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise and weight loss, smoking).

Medical Treatment

Medical treatment for coronary heart disease includes drugs that alleviate symptoms by slowing the heart down, so that a limited blood supply matches less demand, or relax (dilate) arteries so that more blood can pass through, lower blood pressure so that the heart has to work less, lower cholesterol etc. etc. It also includes lifestyle modifications (diet, exercise and weight loss). No present treatment can cure CAD!
