I have a Depressed Sternum

Hi Dr T, What exactly is this and what problem does this cause?

It is a birth defect. If severe, it may compress and displace your heart and lungs and may need to be fixed. It is called pectus excavatum and associated anomalies such as scoliosis should also be considered.

Occasionally, Marfan syndrome and Mitral Valve prolapse occurs in this type of patient. MVP occurs more often in women than in men.

Hope this helps,
Dr T
